Ichigo-ichie

There is a beautiful word in Japanese, "Ichigo-ichie", which translates into meeting only once in a lifetime, suggesting that we treasure every interaction. It perfectly expresses what many of us say when we open space: Enjoy being here now because there has never been a group in the past 14 million years that has ever had this exact conversation, and there will never be one again. The same can be said of any conversation we have. (thanks to Mark McDermott for this)

Hello Jack!

My two eldest daughters went to Japan a year ago. They took hundreds of photos which I have been enjoying, and they found the same emphasis on special individuality and moment which you touch on here. Our US culture is much too arrogant and ignorant, so the subtleties wiz over our heads.

All the best, Jeff

Thanks much Jeff - great to hear from you. Our cultural ignorance is how we squander this moment now as simply a means to getting to some future moment.
